In this tutorial we are going to make a simple paracord keychain using a small monkey’s fist knot.
The monkey fist knot is very popular, since it makes a spherical paracord knot that can be used in many applications. It is a knot formerly used by sailors, but has been widely adopted because of its unique look.
The monkey fist knot itself is very useful and can be used in anything ranging from a dog collar to a weapon like the bola. As such it is one of the knots you should know. Luckily it is an easy knot to learn and remember.
We are first going to form a monkey’s fist:
Take two cords of different colors and form a loop.
Tie an overhand knot.
Wrap one of the cords around your fingers.
Place the joined end inside the knot to act as a core.
Wrap horizontally now.
Remove the cords from your fingers.
Make the third wrap, this time on the inside of the knot.
Tighten the knot slowly. Now we will attach a keyring.
Take a key ring and slike it down towards your monkey fist. Place your left cord under the right.
The right cord forms a loop, going under the left cord and into the loop on the left.
Tighten the first knot.
Step 1: Make a loop to the right side.
Pass the left cord over and through the loop.
Step 2: Now the loop is made on the left.
Pass the right cord over and through the loop on the left.
Tighten. Now continue with step 1, making another loop to the right side and continue alternating the sides where you tie your cobra knots.
Once you have sufficient length, cut the cords and melt the ends.
