Reading a European Sword: Typology, Forge, Care
A European sword is read in layers: first the blade profile and proportions, then the hilt form, then the marks left by forge and heat treatment, and finally the condition that conservation has preserved or erased. The Oakeshott typology covers blades from type X to XXII by outline and cross-section, Viking-age hilts are grouped by Petersen, Wheeler and Geibig, and forge practice plus quenching explain why two swords of the same type can look and behave differently. How does the Oakeshott typology classify blades from type X to XXII?
Oakeshott's system, set out in The Sword in the Age of Chivalry, sorts blades by two visible features: the outline of the blade and the shape of its cross-section. Type X is a broad, parallel-edged blade with a wide fuller running most of its length, typical of the late Viking age and the eleventh century. As the sequence advances, blades become narrower, fullers shorten, and the profile tapers more sharply toward the point.
Types XI and XII keep a fuller but move toward a more tapered outline. Type XIII is a broad, flat blade with edges running nearly parallel and a short fuller, often associated with cutting. Type XIV combines a broad base with a pronounced taper. Type XV is strongly tapered with a flattened diamond section and no fuller, a thrust-oriented form. Type XVI and XVII continue that trend with narrower profiles and stiffer sections. Type XVIII, common in the fifteenth century, has a tapering blade with a flattened diamond section and a distinct edge bevel. Type XIX is flat with parallel edges and a fuller near the hilt. Type XX, XXI and XXII are large late-medieval and Renaissance forms, often with multiple fullers or a hollow-ground section.
The type letter describes the blade, not the whole sword. A hilt, pommel and guard are classified separately, and Oakeshott himself warned that many surviving blades sit between categories. Practical reading means measuring blade length, width at the base, width before the point, fuller length and section thickness, then comparing those numbers with the published type descriptions rather than matching a photograph by eye.
What defines a Viking-age sword by Petersen, Wheeler and Geibig?
Viking-age swords, roughly the eighth to eleventh centuries, are classified mainly by hilt furniture, because blade shapes in that period are less varied than the hilts. Jan Petersen's 1919 study, De Norske Vikingesverd, established the foundational sequence of types, usually cited with Roman numerals or letters depending on the edition. Petersen grouped swords by pommel shape, guard form and the way the upper and lower guards relate to the grip.
Morten Wheeler later simplified the picture for English-speaking readers, treating the hilts in broader families and stressing the five-part construction: upper guard, lower guard, grip, pommel and blade. Alfred Geibig, working from the material at Bamberg, re-examined the same corpus and produced a more detailed typology that separates pommel forms, guard forms and blade forms into independent variables. That independence matters, because a Petersen type can appear with more than one blade shape, and a blade shape can appear with more than one hilt.
In practice, a Viking-age sword is identified by describing the pommel (three-lobed, five-lobed, brazil-nut, tea-cosy and similar), the guard (straight, curved, tapered), the grip length and the blade width. Petersen, Wheeler and Geibig overlap but do not agree in every case, so a responsible description names the system being used. A sword called type S in one catalogue may be described differently in another, and that is a feature of the material, not an error.
How do pattern welding, quenching and conservation fit together?
These three topics answer different questions about the same object. Pattern welding is a construction method: layers of iron and steel are stacked, forged together and twisted or folded to build a blade with a visible pattern and a tough composite structure. It was used before reliable crucible steel was widely available in Europe, and it leaves a characteristic banded surface that survives only if the blade has not been heavily ground or polished.
Quenching and tempering are heat treatments applied after forging. The smith heats the blade to a controlled temperature, quenches it in a medium such as water, oil or brine, then reheats it to temper the resulting hardness. The four-heat sequence described in historical and experimental accounts covers normalising, hardening, tempering and sometimes a second tempering pass. The result is a blade that holds an edge without being brittle, and the visible evidence is often subtle: a hamon-like line on polished steel, a slight colour difference, or a hardness reading taken with a portable tester.
Conservation is what determines whether any of that evidence is still readable. Rust, fingerprints, humidity and unstable storage attack the surface first. A blade kept in a damp cellar for fifty years may have lost its pattern-welded bands to corrosion, while a blade kept dry may retain them under a thin patina. Public collections in Europe generally follow the same principles: stable relative humidity, inert mounts, minimal handling with gloves, and documentation of every intervention. For a reader trying to interpret a sword, the conservation history is part of the evidence, not a separate subject.
What should you measure before assigning a type?
Measure blade length from the guard to the point, blade width at the base and just before the point, fuller length and width, and section thickness at the base and mid-blade. Record hilt dimensions separately: grip length, guard width, pommel height and weight if the sword can be weighed safely. Photograph the blade against a scale under even light, with the point and the base both visible in the same frame.
These numbers let you compare a sword with published type descriptions instead of relying on silhouette. They also reveal repairs: a blade that has been shortened, a guard that has been replaced, a pommel that does not match the period of the blade. Oakeshott's types assume an intact blade, so a shortened example should be described as such rather than forced into a category.
Where does conservation evidence change the reading?
Corrosion removes the outer layer of steel, and with it the pattern, the edge geometry and sometimes the maker's marks. A blade that reads as a plain type XV today may once have had a fuller that has since corroded away. Fingerprints and acidic handling leave etch marks that can be mistaken for pattern welding. Repeated polishing in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries flattened sections and rounded edges, which shifts a blade toward a different type on paper.
For that reason, a description should separate what is observed from what is inferred. State the current measurements, note the condition, and say which features are uncertain. Collections that publish condition reports alongside typological labels make this easier, and the same discipline applies to a private sword photographed at home.
How do you keep a sword readable?
Keep relative humidity stable, generally between 40 and 55 percent, and avoid rapid changes. Store the sword horizontally or vertically in a mount that does not press on the blade, and handle it with clean cotton or nitrile gloves. Do not oil a blade that is already corroding without first documenting the corrosion, because oil can lift loose flakes and obscure the surface. Clean with the least aggressive method that works, and record what was done, when and with what.
A sword is a document as much as an object. Typology gives it a name, forge practice explains how it was made, heat treatment explains how it was hardened, and conservation decides what remains to be read. Working through those four layers in order keeps the description honest and the object intact.
